Undergrad advancement

One year ago, we announced the promotion of Martha Loudder to the position of associate dean for undergraduate programs and learning assessment. We said then our focus would be on providing undergraduate students with a “small school” learning environment within a very large business school. Building on the outstanding work of her predecessor Clair Nixon, we have made some tremendous strides under Loudder’s leadership during this first year:

  • We began implementation of our “Transitions” program, which provides students with the ability to transition to independence (freshman), interdependence (sophomore), expertise (junior), and career (senior). Our Transitions program focuses on developing the core competencies of communicating; problem solving; creating new opportunities; managing, leading and working as a member of a team; acting ethically; and demonstrating global and cultural awareness.
  • In fall 2006, because of the generosity of John Speer ’71 and Royce Builders, our Freshman Business Initiative will now be available to all incoming students who desire membership in this learning community. Previously, financial constraints limited enrollment to 250 randomly selected students, out of more than 600 applicants.
  • We will submit a proposal to Texas A&M administrators to create an undergraduate major in business honors, with a targeted start date of fall 2007. This major would consist of small classes, a case-oriented learning environment and a rigorous academic curriculum for our very best students.

Why are we making such significant changes to an already outstanding program? Our graduates face a very competitive environment for employment with leading organizations and enrollment at top graduate schools. Mays’ goal is quite simple: to provide our students with every opportunity for success, both during their studies and following their graduation.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to review this issue of Mays Business Online. As always, we appreciate your support and welcome your feedback on our ideas and initiatives. If your travels bring you to College Station, I hope you’ll stop by for a visit.
